About

Why W9OMS? It is my amateur radio call sign (Whiskey, 9, Oscar, Mike, Sierra). More significantly, it was my father’s call sign. After meaning to get an amateur license since high school, I finally took the plunge in 2019. After the FCC removed the Morse code requirement in 2006, the barrier to entry was significantly lower. During an intense two months of study and review, I worked my way through all three levels (Technician, General & Extra) earning an Extra class license. My father let his call sign registration lapse in 1995. The FCC allows Hams to request a specific call sign if it is unassigned. I was able to get my father’s call sign so W9OMS lives on. More interesting yet, a friend pointed out that OMS stands for Old Man’s Son.
